Lands
End is the most south-westerly point of mainland Britain and John O'Groats
is the most north-easterly point - 601 miles apart as the crow flies.
Cycling between the two obviously makes for a longer route and the
distance was first cycled in the
1980's and the current record for the fastest time is held by Andy Wilkinson at
41 hours, 4 minutes and 22 seconds! That's an average
speed of 19.4mph (over 874miles)!
I
have also included the most southern point of mainland Britain, Lizard
Point, and the most northern point, Dunnet Head in my route. This
makes my trip nearly 1080 miles. Initially I had planned to ride for
13 days but I ended up doing it in 12.
I will be travelling solo and unsupported on a Trek 1500 road bike,
carrying all my gear in a pannier. I will be staying at youth
hostels most nights, except one night at my University halls of residence
in Preston and a couple of nights in B&Bs (Carlisle and Fort William).
The reason that I did this ride was because I wanted to
but I thought I may as well try and raise some money for a charity along
the way.
I chose to support Cancer Research UK and raised
£655.23
1 in 4 people will get some form of cancer and 1 in 3 die from it.
Cancer is responsible for over 150,000 deaths per year in the UK - equal
to a 9/11 attack every week! Cancer Research UK are the leading
charity in fighting cancer in the UK, with over 3000 scientists, doctors
and nurses working together to fight all types of cancer.
